The spread of the novel coronavirus — or COVID-19 — has not affected New Mexico Water’s water supply, and we want to assure our customers that your tap water remains safe for drinking, cooking, and handwashing.

Can I get COVID-19 from drinking water?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Environmental Protection Agency all agree that the novel coronavirus cannot be transmitted through drinking water.

Do I need to boil my tap water?

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, boiling your water is not needed as a precaution against COVID-19.

Do I need to buy bottled drinking water?

Our customers do not need to stock up on bottled water; they can use their tap water with confidence that it continues to meet all state and federal drinking water standards.

Is my water treated for COVID-19?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, World Health Organization, and Environmental Protection Agency have agreed that the safeguards and the water quality treatment processes we take — now and always — are effective to protect your water from viruses and pathogens, including the coronavirus.

Will my water service be disrupted?

Our water system infrastructure continues to operate normally. Perhaps now more than ever, having a safe and reliable supply of clean water is vital to the health and well-being of the community, and it is a responsibility our team takes seriously.

What is New Mexico Water doing to protect employees?

Our team is complying with all social distancing guidelines, as well as upholding the highest standard in personal hygiene and workplace sanitation practices to keep everyone healthy and ready to deliver an essential service across the communities we serve. Our team members are also on the ground, continuing to install and maintain vital infrastructure, and we ask our neighbors to maintain a safe social distance from New Mexico Water crews when you see them in your community.

To do our part to help minimize the spread of COVID-19 across the community, we have also opted to temporarily close our local Customer Centers to walk-in traffic. Our decision was informed by the recently released recommendations from the CDC that organizations take steps to minimize the number of people standing in lines and non-critical gatherings where individuals are not able to maintain six feet of personal space.

Customers can and are encouraged to pay their bills online, and they can quickly and easily set up their free online profile. Our representatives remain available to support our customers via phone, email, and online, and for service calls.

What’s the best way to stay informed about my water service during the coronavirus pandemic?

Update your contact information in your free, online customer account. If there is any important water system news, we’ll post information and can send emails or phone calls for real-time updates about your water service.
